Plumbing Across Every Berkeley Neighborhood

Berkeley is a small city with very different plumbing from block to block. A flatland duplex near Ashby BART and a hillside house off Grizzly Peak Boulevard fail in different ways. Here’s what to expect where you live.

Quick answer: We cover all of Berkeley: 94702, 94703, 94704, 94705, 94707, 94708, 94709 and 94710. Hills homes tend to have long, steep sewer laterals and tricky access; the flats have older clay laterals in expansive soil and more storm-time backups. ZIP codes and neighborhood lines don’t match exactly; if you’re unsure, just call.

Hills vs flats

  • The Hills. Steep lots mean longer sewer laterals, harder digging and access through crawlspaces or retaining walls. Being close to the Hayward Fault makes seismic gas valves and strapped water heaters especially worthwhile.
  • The flats. Older clay laterals in expansive clay soil, lots of street trees, and storm water finding its way into cracked pipe. Rain-time backups and drain cleaning calls cluster here in winter.
  • Near campus. Multi-unit buildings, shared laterals and tenant coordination, with turnover work clustered around move-in season.

Nearby cities

We take calls from the edges of Berkeley too: Albany, Kensington, Emeryville and North Oakland around Rockridge and Temescal. One important difference: those cities are part of EBMUD’s regional sewer lateral program, not Berkeley’s City sewer lateral certificate, so the rules for selling or remodeling aren’t the same.

FAQ

Common Questions

Which areas do you serve?

All of Berkeley, ZIP codes 94702, 94703, 94704, 94705, 94707, 94708, 94709 and 94710, from the Marina and West Berkeley to the Hills. Call about nearby Albany, Kensington, Emeryville and North Oakland edges.

Do you serve the Berkeley Hills?

Yes. Hillside homes in 94708 and the upper parts of 94705 and 94707 often have long sewer laterals, steep access and tight crawlspaces, so it helps to describe the access when you call.

Do the same sewer lateral rules apply in Albany or Emeryville?

No. Berkeley has its own sewer lateral program. Albany, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington and Oakland fall under EBMUD’s regional program, which has different triggers and paperwork.

How fast can someone get to me?

It depends on the time of day and how busy it is. Call (510) 822-3070 and you’ll get a real arrival window on the phone, not a guess.
