Drain Cleaning in Berkeley, CA

Slow sinks, gurgling toilets and the backup that always seems to happen on a storm night. In Berkeley the cause is usually an old lateral and a big tree, so the fix is clearing the line now and finding out why it clogged.

Last reviewed October 15, 2026

Quick answer: If one drain is slow, it’s usually a local clog in that fixture’s trap or branch line. If several drains are slow, toilets gurgle, or water comes up in a tub when you flush, the main sewer line is blocked; stop using water and call (510) 822-3070. In older Berkeley homes, roots in clay or cast-iron laterals are the most common main-line cause.

Why Berkeley drains clog

  • Old laterals. About 46% of Berkeley homes were built in 1939 or earlier. Most still have clay or cast-iron sewer laterals with joints roots can find.
  • Big trees. Street trees and mature yard trees send roots into those joints, especially in North Berkeley, Elmwood and Thousand Oaks.
  • Clay soil. Expansive clay in much of the flats shifts with the seasons and opens joints.
  • Storms. Winter atmospheric rivers push groundwater into cracked pipe and fill the system, so a line that’s merely narrow in summer backs up in December.
  • Kitchen lines. Decades of grease narrow old galvanized and cast-iron kitchen drains.

How the line gets cleared

MethodBest forNotes
Cable snake (auger)Most clogs; cutting rootsFast; opens a path but doesn’t scrub the pipe wall
Hydro jettingGrease, sludge, fine roots, scaleCleans the full pipe diameter; check pipe condition first on old clay or thin cast iron
Camera inspectionRecurring clogs; before buying or sellingShows why it clogged. See sewer camera inspection

If clearing the line turns up broken pipe, a sag or heavy root intrusion, you’ll get a straight answer on whether it can be repaired or needs replacement, priced in writing. If you’re selling, this connects directly to the Berkeley sewer lateral certificate.

Before the rains: a short checklist

  • Know where your cleanout is, and keep it clear of plants and mulch
  • Clear gutters and make sure downspouts aren’t tied into the sewer; Berkeley requires those connections removed
  • If you had a backup last winter, get the line scoped in early fall
  • Keep grease and wipes out of drains, even the ones labeled flushable

FAQ

Common Questions

How do I know if my main sewer line is clogged?

More than one fixture acting up at once is the giveaway: several slow drains, a toilet that gurgles when the sink drains, or water rising in the shower when you flush. A single slow sink is usually just that sink. If it’s the main, stop running water and call.

Why do my drains back up when it rains in Berkeley?

Cracked clay and cast-iron laterals let rainwater and groundwater in during storms, and the sewer system fills up fast. If your line is already narrowed by roots or buildup, it overflows first. Recurring rain-time backups are a sign the lateral needs a camera inspection.

Is snaking or hydro jetting better?

A cable snake opens a clog and cuts roots; it’s quick and works for most single blockages. Hydro jetting scrubs the whole pipe wall with high-pressure water, which clears grease and fine roots more completely. Jetting isn’t safe on every old pipe, so a camera check first is wise.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe for old pipes?

It’s best to skip them in older homes. Harsh chemicals can sit in a stopped drain, attack old metal pipes and fixtures, and make the job more dangerous for whoever opens the line next. A plunger, a hand auger, or a professional cleaning is the safer route.

How often should a Berkeley sewer line with roots be cleaned?

If roots are the cause, they grow back, often within a year. Some owners schedule cleaning every year before the rains. If you’re paying for that every year, compare it with the cost of a repair or replacement that keeps roots out for good.

Do you need a cleanout to clear my main line?

A cleanout makes it faster and cleaner. Without one, the line can sometimes be reached by pulling a toilet or through a roof vent. Many older Berkeley homes don’t have a usable cleanout, and adding one is worth it for future maintenance and the City’s sewer lateral test.
